Migrate from Trello

Looking for a free Trello alternative? Fossys Boards lets you import your existing Trello boards in minutes. Your lists become columns, your cards stay as cards, and your labels come along for the ride. No data left behind, no manual re-entry required.

1

Export your Trello board

Open the board you want to migrate in Trello. Click the board menu (three dots in the top-right corner), then go to More > Print and Export > Export as JSON. Your browser will download a .json file containing everything on that board.

Repeat this for each board you want to bring over. Each board exports as a separate file.

Log in to Fossys Boards

Sign in to your Fossys Boards account at boards.fossys.com. If you do not have an account yet, sign up for free — it takes less than a minute and no credit card is needed.

3

Click Import in the sidebar

In your workspace, look for the Import option in the left sidebar. This opens the import wizard, which supports multiple sources including Trello, Asana, and CSV files.

4

Select "Trello" and upload your JSON file

Choose Trello as the import source. Then drag and drop your exported .json file into the upload area, or click to browse your files. The importer will parse the file and show you a preview of what will be created.

Large boards with hundreds of cards may take a few seconds to process. You will see a progress indicator while the import runs.

5

Review the imported board

Once the import completes, your new board opens automatically. Trello lists become columns, cards stay as cards, and labels are preserved with their original colors and names. Take a moment to verify everything looks correct.

You can now rename columns, add new views (Table, Calendar, Timeline), set up automations, and use AI task creation — features that go beyond what Trello offers for free.

Tips for a smooth migration

Can I import multiple boards at once?

Currently, each board must be imported one at a time. Export each Trello board as a separate JSON file and import them individually. We are working on batch import for a future release.

Will my archived cards be imported?

Yes. Trello's JSON export includes archived cards. They will be imported as archived cards in Fossys Boards, so they will not clutter your active columns but remain accessible if you need them.

What if something goes wrong?

Importing does not modify your Trello board. Your original data stays exactly where it is. If the import does not look right, you can delete the imported board in Fossys Boards and try again.
